The WeightWatchers™ Diet

The WeightWatchers™ Diet, or WW for short, was founded in 1963 and has been around for 60 years. The diet was established by Queens, New York City, homemaker Jean Nidetch. Even though the diet was founded in 1963, it had really begun around 1961 when the founder, Jean Nidetch, encountered a woman who thought she was pregnant. That experience prompted her to visit an obesity clinic and go on different diets for 10 weeks. However, she was merely pretending as she was still secretly gorging on cookies hidden in the hamper. Trapped in her circumstance, she decided to call on six friends struggling with being overweight, which began a confessional. They all went on a diet, aided each other in their relationship with food, and after 2 months, about 40 people attended the meetings. In October 1962, Mrs. Nidetch achieved her goal of weighing 142 pounds. With the success, she, her husband, Mortimer Nidetch, and a couple she had previously helped, Felice and Albert Lippert, formed a corporation now known as WeightWatchers™ in a loft over a movie theatre in Little Neck in May 1963 (McFadden, 2015).

Weight Watchers is a program that encourages healthy eating and physical activity. The “SmartPoints” system assigns a value to each food and beverage. Depending on your goals and needs, the total points you are to use every day may vary. The Smartpoints are calculated by setting a baseline number for the particular food or beverage. The baseline is determined by the calories. Saturated fat and sugar drive the SmartPoints value up, while protein drives it down.

According to members of WeightWatchers™, those who follow the program can expect to lose around 500 grams to 1 kilogram per week (Katerina Gkionis, 2019). Maintaining one’s desired weight with this diet is achieved by staying within reasonable WeightWatchers™ values.

In terms of how much a person on this diet would have to spend on food, the amount is variable since the diet’s focus is not on the types of food that should or should not be consumed, but instead, its focus is on proportions.

It has been demonstrated that WeightWatchers causes considerable and long-lasting weight loss at both one- and two-year follow-ups. At two years, 63% of the weight lost through a 52-week WeightWatchers program was still off. At the two-year follow-up, nearly 40% of individuals had lost a clinically relevant 5% of their initial weight (WeightWatchers, 2021).
